New York paycheck deductions explained

New York State income tax ranges from 4% to 10.9% depending on income and filing status. This calculator covers New York State tax only — residents of New York City or Yonkers pay an additional local income tax on top of the state rate shown here, which isn't included in this estimate.

How this calculator works

We start with your gross pay, apply the 2026 IRS standard deduction for your filing status, then run the remainder through the seven federal tax brackets (10% to 37%) so only the income inside each bracket is taxed at that bracket's rate. Social Security (6.2%, up to the $184,500 wage base) and Medicare (1.45%, plus an extra 0.9% above $200,000) come off next, followed by any applicable state tax.

Frequently asked questions

How much is New York state tax on my paycheck?

New York State income tax ranges from 4% to 10.9%, depending on your income and filing status, using a progressive bracket system similar to the federal one.

Does this include New York City tax?

No. This calculator covers New York State tax only. Residents of New York City or Yonkers pay an additional local income tax on top of the state rate, which isn't included in this estimate.

Why is my New York paycheck lower than expected?

New York has one of the higher state tax rates in the country, and NYC/Yonkers residents pay an extra local tax on top — both reduce take-home pay compared to a no-tax state.

Is this New York paycheck calculator accurate for 2026?

It uses New York's published 2026 state tax brackets and current federal figures. It's an estimate for planning purposes, and doesn't include NYC/Yonkers local tax.
